… As Time Goes By

With the publication of a satirical little book about the 1983 road trip Mitt Romney took with the family dog on the roof, many wonder about why this meaningless old tale just doesn’t go away.  Latest is Marlo Thomas, sitcom icon, who finds no comedic precedent for its sway over commentators, New York Times writers and general politerati.

She’s looking in the wrong place.  Comes to mind the elegant swell of a columnist at the old San Francisco Chronicle, Charles McCabe.  One of his columns back in the 1960s reminded us of the four sure fire newspaper leads: Sex, death, alcohol and dogs.

I’ve watched since then.  It’s true.
