Words Like Loaded Pistols

That’s the great title of new book by Sam Leith, English newspaper editor.  It’s a disappointment then to find the book is a standard rhetoric manual.  It covers the Greeks and other ancients in a familiar story.

Other than reviewing a couple of speeches, the book is not very practical.  For example, you won’t learn how to use words like loaded pistols.  But it’s a fine enough book for its kind.

The glossary of rhetorical terms is handy for when you get your synecdoche mixed up with your metonymy.
