Free Speech Starts and ENDS Here

We’re sounding the alarm.  And we are going to keep on this one.

You are required to speak well of the hockey coaches at the State University at New York (SUNY) Oswego.

Student Alexander Myers found this out recently when, as part of a class assignment, he surveyed people about the college’s hockey coach Ed Gosek with the invitation “what you say about Mr Gosek does not have to be positive.”

In a reaction that continues and reinforces a major national trend on college campuses, the SUNY Oswego administration slapped the student with a suspension for “disruptive behavior.”  The administration said Myers violated their speech code which prohibits words that “defame, harass, intimidate, or threaten another individual or group.”

Speech Code?  In America?  At a college?

Always offensive, a restriction on free speech is most dangerous on college campuses where we are spending a lot of money to create the opposite: unfettered enquiry based on free thought.

And it’s happening all over the country.  Political correctness isn’t funny anymore because too many people are enforcing their version of it.  Here’s a list of institutions of higher education where the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (more below) recently filed complaints for violations of Freedom of Speech:
